ULS AIRLINES CARGO WAS THE FIRST TURKISH AIRLINE TO REACH THE TSUNAMI VICTIMS

The last days of the year 2004 all the world lived a very sad natural disaster. After the earthquake and the Tsunami exited northwest of Sumatra Island which influenced many countries that have coasts near the Indian Ocean; we carried relief goods for the United Nations Organization to Colombo - the capital of Sri Lanka.

The first relief goods - such as food, medicines, blankets, and tents were taken from Brindisi / Italy, delivered to Colombo in a succesful operation on December 29th, 2004. Our aircraft in Brindisi was prominently shown on Italian national television. For the second operation relief goods were taken from Bordeaux / France; and again delivered to Colombo on December 31st, 2004. The flights went through Karachi to obtain fuel.

We were the first Turkish company to reach Sri Lanka with aid… Our Load Master Ali Calender reports: “There was a big traffic in Colombo Airport. A Turkish technician who was working for BonAir came to us and said that we were the first Turkish aircraft from Turkey for the last nine months. His house was destroyed by the disaster and was living in his office. The waves of Tsunami made a lot of damage to the east and the south part of the Island; but Colombo was allright as it is on the west side of Sri Lanka.”

Our TC-ABK aircraft which is an A300B4 with a 45 tonnes capacity, ended its two succesful operations on January 1st, 2005 in Istanbul.
